Dear colleagues and students,

Happy fall! The weather has been wonderfully cooler and perfect for enjoying a coffee or tea while curling up with a good book. I may indulge in some of that this weekend. But first, I want to fill you in on things happening at UAFS.

Congratulations to the Department of Athletics on a fun and well-attended Moonlight Madness event last night. It was great to see our cheer and dance teams while showcasing the women鈥檚 and men鈥檚 basketball teams. One lucky student won $500 in Lions Cash when he shot a basket from half-court! I was duly impressed and didn鈥檛 even try to do it! Major thanks to Dyllan Newell for his hard work to make this event a success

The Department of Financial Aid had a highly productive meeting with the Workday Student Services team to create an earlier financial aid packaging plan for this year. Our students enrolling in fall 2027 should begin receiving financial aid packages in early March 2027. Returning students, please complete your in order to ensure that you are among the first to be considered for available grant funding.

This week, Arvest Bank presented UAFS with a check for $50,000 toward the new Center for Maternal and Infant Healthcare. We will be selecting architects and engineers to design this new center using the $15 million in Congressionally Directed Funds we received last spring. This is an exciting development as we continue to raise funds for this important initiative to support our students who will be providing nursing care for moms and babies. Thank you, Arvest Bank, for investing in the future of UAFS and many thanks to the fantastic team in University Advancement for securing and stewarding these generous gifts.

Many thanks to the Hispanic Heritage Committee for their work to plan and host Salsa at the Bell Tower. One of my favorite nights of the year, the event featured delicious food and salsa dancing. It was a wonderful way to gather with students, employees, and community members to have fun and celebrate Hispanic Heritage. Their next event, Family Game Night, will be held on October 8 from 6-8 p.m. in the Reynolds Room, so I hope to see you there!

Professional Clothing: In preparation for the All Majors Career Fair on Wednesday, the Office of Career Services will open the UAFS Clothing Closet, located in Flanders Building, room 110, from 1-3 p.m. on Monday, October 5. Clothing is FREE for students to take. Also, JC Penney will host its 鈥淪uit Up鈥 event on Monday evening from 4-7 p.m. at the Fort Smith Mall where students and employees can shop for business attire at a 30-35% discount.

Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) Mid-Autumn Festival: Come celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with UAFS VSA! Join us tonight (10/2) for an evening of good food, fun, and good company as we celebrate this special tradition together. Whether you鈥檝e celebrated before or are learning about it for the first time, come hang out, enjoy some treats, and make some new memories with us! The event will be held tonight in the Reynolds Room of the Campus Center from 7:30-10 p.m.

Do you enjoy watching UAFS Volleyball? I do鈥nd I certainly don鈥檛 want to miss watching them play against UA-Monticello on Monday, October 5 at 6 p.m. in the Stubblefield Center. Students and employees can attend for free, so please join me on Monday to root for our Lions.

Have a great and safe weekend!
