Service Animals and Assistance Animals
Student Disability Services at the Ï㽶ÊÓƵAPP works with students who use service animals or need to request an assistance animal as a disability-related accommodation. The process depends on where the animal will be used and whether your request involves university housing.
Service animals and assistance animals are not the same. Service animals are generally permitted in public campus areas where students, visitors, and members of the public are allowed. Assistance animals, also called emotional support animals, are generally reviewed as housing-related accommodation requests.
This process also applies to students and guests participating in summer conferences, new student orientation (Mane Event), and other short-term programs. Participants must begin the process outlined on this page at least 10 business days before the start of the conference, orientation, or move-in date.
Service Animals on Campus
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service animal is a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. The work or task performed must be directly related to the person's disability. In some circumstances, a trained miniature horse may also qualify.
For the full federal definition, visit on ADA.gov.
If you use a service animal, you may generally bring the animal into classrooms and other public campus areas where students, visitors, or members of the public are allowed.
If you use a service animal and are living in University Housing, please contact Student Disability Services to discuss what required veterinary paperwork may be needed for the animal.
You are encouraged to contact Student Disability Services if you have questions or would like help coordinating access with instructors, staff, or campus offices. Call 479-788-7577, email ADAFREEuafs, or visit Student Disability Services in Flanders, Room 114.
Assistance Animals in University Housing
An assistance animal may be considered as a reasonable accommodation in university housing when there is a disability-related need. Assistance animal requests are reviewed through the Student Disability Services accommodation process.
No animal may be present in any residential area of campus until the full review and approval process is complete. You should begin the process as early as possible.
How to Request an Assistance Animal in Housing
To request an assistance animal in university housing, follow these steps:
- Step 1 - Schedule a Meeting with Student Disability Services
Contact SDS to request an intake meeting. Call 479-788-7577, email ADAFREEuafs, or visit Student Disability Services in Flanders, Room 114. - Step 2 - Participate in the Intake Meeting
During your intake meeting, SDS will discuss your disability-related need for an assistance animal, explain the full process, and provide any required forms or documentation instructions. You will receive a copy of the policy and all necessary documents that must be completed and returned. - Step 3 - Submit Required Documentation
Gather and submit your completed documentation and required forms to Student Disability Services for review. - Step 4 - Receive Approval
If your request is approved by SDS, you will schedule a second meeting to come in and sign the required paperwork. SDS will send your approval to Housing and Residential Life. - Step 5 - Complete Housing Steps
Contact Housing and Residential Life to finish the approval process and coordinate with them before bringing the animal to campus housing. Contact Housing and Residential Life at HousingFREEuafs to schedule that meeting. - Step 6 - Wait for Final Approval Before Bringing the Animal to Campus
